Science Museum Oklahoma Offers Staycation Fun Over Memorial Day Weekend

May 22, 2017

Oklahoma City metro-area families staying close to home this Memorial Day weekend will find something for everyone at Science Museum Oklahoma. The museum located at 2020 Remington Place in Oklahoma City will be open with regular hours throughout the weekend, including on Memorial Day.

“It’s an exciting time to visit the museum,” said Linda Maisch, vice president for community engagement and organizational development at SMO.

“Our entire team has been hard at work this spring opening a new traveling exhibition — ‘Bodies Revealed’ — and updating a number of our classic exhibits in the heart of the museum on the Science Floor, plus ‘Backyard Bugs,’ a brand new exhibition from the Oklahoma Museum Network.”

SMO opened “Bodies Revealed” in April, a comprehensive exploration the human body that gives visitors the opportunity to view the beautiful complexity of their own organs and systems.

Developed by Premier Exhibitions Inc., “Bodies Revealed” features whole and partial scientific human body specimens that have been meticulously preserved through an innovative process. The exhibition will run through Oct. 29 and is not included with general admission.

“Backyard Bugs: An Oklahoma Insect Adventure” also debuted in April and includes an enormous animatronic praying mantis and monarch butterfly, more than a dozen varieties of live insects and arachnids including a black widow, a scorpion, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, darkling beetles and hornworms. Hands-on components include a build-a-bug station, DIY firefly flash patterns, a climb-in honeycomb, and more.

Elsewhere in the museum, guests will note updates to classic exhibits on the Science Floor like the brand new echo tube, refurbished periscope and an updated sand pendulum, and in the smART Space galleries, “Sole Expression: The Art of the Shoe,” which features 25 shoe designers and artists from throughout the state, nation and world and explores how shoes have been interpreted in art throughout history to local artists’ interpretations of their relationships with shoes.

Science Museum Oklahoma is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Daily general admission is $15.95 for adults (ages 13 to 64) and $12.95 for children (ages 3 to 12) and seniors (65 and older). General admission for “Bodies Revealed,” which includes access to the entire museum, is $25.95 for adults, $20.95 for seniors and $18.95 for children.
