Applications Now Open for Science Museum Oklahoma Summer Teen Apprentice Program
February 27, 2017Oklahoma City metro students entering grades 7-12 who want to spend a summer increasing science literacy, honing job skills and having fun now have their chance: Applications for the 2017 Teen Apprentice Program at Science Museum Oklahoma will be accepted through March 17.
“The Apprentice Program is a great opportunity for teens looking to become more involved in the museum or informal education community. Apprentices will see what it takes to make a hands-on science museum work, plus experience the rewards of helping to guide our guests’ educational experiences,” said Clint Stone, director of education at training at SMO.
Apprentices perform a variety of tasks assisting the museum in achieving its mission of sparking curiosity and encouraging learning by exploring the wonder and relevance of science. Throughout the summer, selected apprentices may assist in facilitation and activities including day-to-day operation of exhibits, camp activities, production of stage performances and educational programming.
“Students develop the soft skills they will need to succeed in the workplace, like problem-solving, leadership, working in teams and good communication in a fun, professional science museum environment. It’s not uncommon for teens who have completed the Apprentice Program to come back to the museum and join us as a member of our team or even discover other interests that may become lifelong pursuits through their experience,” Stone added.
Finalists will be interviewed during the weeks of March 20-31 and all selected apprentices must attend training from June 5-9. The 2017 SMO Apprentice Program runs from June 12 to August 4.
